Cassandra has focused her dance study and performance on the Egyptian Raks Sharqi and Middle Eastern folkloric dance since 1974. Her studies began in San Francisco with the legendary performer, Jamila Salimpour, and have continued since 1980 through regular research trips to the Middle East. Cassandra began her career as a cabaret performer. Since 1984, she has widened the scope of her artistic expression by presenting the dance on the theater stage. Cassandra is the founder and Artistic Director of Jawaahir Dance Company. Jawaahir is dedicated to bringing the rich folkloric heritage of the Middle East to the theater stage as a living art form. Cassandra is a recipient of the Minnesota Dance Alliance/McKnight Foundation Resident Choreographer's Award, as well as the MDA/Jerome Foundation Sponsor Pool and Dancer Pool Awards. Since 1992, she has been on the short and prestigious list of the Minneapolis Southern Theater’s presented artists. Cassandra teaches and performs world-wide, and has earned an international reputation as an Oriental dance teacher, researcher, and performer.
