Lefkosa Folklore Association "FOLK-DER", Cyprus

The Lefkosa Folklore Association (FOLK – DER) was established on 3 February 1997 in order to keep the Turkish Cypriot folklore alive, to contribute to the international relations in this field and to bring to light the values of the Turkish Cypriot traditional way of life.
The group of volunteers who have studied folklore for many years and practised folk dancing, came together with this aim. Children, youngsters and adults, who love the art of folk dancing are trying to bridge the past and the future.
FOLK – DER attempting to reach people everywhere with the bridge of love and peace with the Turkish Cypriot genuine values is bringing the warmth and friendship of Mediterranean people to every international project it participates in.

The Lefkosa Folklore Association represented North Cyprus in the 4. World Folkloriada in Hungary (2004), and has participated in over 20 international Folklore festivals worldwide including, Turkey, France, Poland, Macedonia, Hungary, Holland, Romania and Bulgaria.
Throughout history, Cyprus - the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily and Sardinia, has been ruled by different empires including Byzantine, Venice, Lusignan, Ottoman and British empires, and as a consequence it has a very colourful cultural heritage, which has naturally affected also its folk dances and music.

FOLK-DER Music Orchestra

Another important part of folk dancing is the accompanying Music. The instruments used here in Cyprus are:
DAVUL : A large drum beaten with a stick

KEMAN : Violin. It’s one of our main musical instruments

ZURNA : A reed instrument

DARBUKA: A small drum made by stretching a leather membrane over a baked clay cylinder. It is played with both hands.

TEF : A tambourine with cymbals.

UD : Small lute

They provide the basic framework of the music to which the lute, accordion, tambourine, guitar and the mandolin add sophistication.
